这是一个复合句。when 引导的是表原因的状语从句。“what its advocates are aiming at”是宾语从句，说明的是“find out”的内容。“however farfetched and unreasonable their principles may seem today”是插入成分，是对原来的“…are aiming at ,for ,it is possible that…”的补充。阅读的时候，可以先把这种插入成分跳过，读完主句明确了该句的主要的意思后，再读插入的成分。
当一种新的艺术倾向形成某种时尚时，可取的态度是弄清倡导者们的意图何在，因为其主张在今天看来多么牵强附会、毫无道理，将来也有可能被认为是正确的。
